Every kitchen needs a few items that make healthy eating easier. No, we’re not talking about funky gadgets like yolk extractors and avocado cubers, but trusted appliances and dishes that you’ll be using regularly and will make a real difference to your nutrition.
Here are 5 of our favourite ones:
Slow cooker
If you want healthy, flavoursome dishes with little effort, invest in a slow cooker. It comes handy especially on days when you don’t have a lot of time to cook or when you want to make dishes in bulk that you can then freeze and use later. Here’s a recipe for a nice slow cooker beef stew that you can try: www.nourishiconsulting.com/ultimate-slow-cooker-beef-stew
Iron cast skillet
Every house needs a couple of pans, and iron cast skillets are a much better choice than non-stick pans as they don’t contain toxic chemicals, and, they also help add some iron to your food, which can be useful especially for those on a plant-based diet.
A simple steamer
Steaming is generally the healthiest cooking method as it preserves the most nutrients in your food. And, it’s also a method that allows you to cook a full family meal in one pot (e.g. fish, potatoes and vegetables) in less than 30 min, with as little as 10 min of prep.
Mason jars
We love these jars for storing all kinds of ingredients and foods – oats, rice, pasta, nuts and seeds, bone broth, leftover stews and much more. Because they are made of glass, they don’t contain any chemicals that you find in plastic containers and you can use them to store food in the cupboard, fridge and even in the freezer.
And finally, a good food processor
One of our favourite brand is Kenwood and a good option they have available is their Multipro Sense processor. You can use it for making nut butters, hummus, mixes for snack bars and desserts, chopping veggies for soups and even for your daily smoothies.
